Conical Seat vs Ball Seat – Know the Difference

Mercedes factory wheels often use ball seat (R14) bolts. But most aftermarket wheels require a 60° conical seat — including BBS, Enkei, Work, and nearly every tuner-style wheel. If you're running aftermarket wheels, this is the bolt you need.

Do not mix seat types. Using a conical bolt in a ball-seat wheel (or vice versa) creates a loose fit and uneven clamping force. Check your wheel's seat design before ordering.

Why 12-Point?

Larger tool contact area — higher torque without stripping the head.

Easier access in tight wheel wells — common on lowered or performance cars.

Motorsport standard — preferred for track cars and quick wheel changes.

Compatibility

Model Years
Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W204 / W205 / W206) 2007+
Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W211 / W212 / W213) 2002+
Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W221 / W222) 2005+
Mercedes-AMG models (C63, E63, GT) —
Most Mercedes models with M14×1.5 thread and aftermarket wheels —

Not compatible with: 2019+ Mercedes GLE (V167/W167) / GLS (X167) — these use M15×1.25 thread. Always confirm thread size and seat type against your wheel before ordering.

Installation Notes

Do not install titanium bolts dry. Galling (cold welding) can occur on the first install and permanently damage threads.

  1. Clean hub threads thoroughly with a thread chaser and brake cleaner.

  2. Apply nickel-based anti-seize to the bolt threads only. Do not apply to the conical seat — seat friction holds the wheel securely. Copper-based anti-seize must not be used with titanium.

  3. Hand-start each bolt until finger-tight. Never use an impact gun to start titanium fasteners.

  4. Torque to 120–130 N·m in a star pattern using a calibrated torque wrench.

  5. Re-check torque after 50–100 km.
